Innovative Technology in an Elementary Classroom

What technology innovations are being tried in contemporary elementary schools? Please give citations from at least three sources.

Teachers are making use of technology because it is becoming increasingly influential in the lives of young learners.  Teachers can utilize technology in the classroom to add relevance, teach meaningful skills, and to motivate and energize students.  There are many ways in which technology is being used in elementary classrooms.  Teachers can incorporate word-processing into their literacy programs, utilize document cameras to increase perspective or draw attention to important elements of a lesson, or incorporate the use of digital cameras to document and record for student portfolios.  One innovative technique that has piqued my interest has been the use of video self-modeling to encourage positive social and academic behaviors among students.  So what exactly is video self-modeling?   The concept is simple, record a child prompted to perform a social skill properly, edit out the prompts and show the child footage of himself or herself performing the skill appropriately (Kruutz, 2009).   A significant amount of research on video self-modeling has been done on students regarding social behaviors, particularly those that experience autism.  However, as a classroom teacher, I believe this technique could have significant benefits for all students, reinforcing positive aspects of both behavioral and academic traits.  I think it can be very powerful for students to view themselves on video, particularly with an objective in mind that they are analyzing about themselves.  My students review video of themselves when they present a book to the class from their reading group.  I am curious about some of these other ways to incorporate video recording.  The benefit to using video modeling on individuals are numerous.  Not only is it an evidence-based practice, it involves easily accessible technology and is easy to do” (Hitchcock, Dowrick & Prater, 2011).  Research indicates that video self-modeling is an effective means for improving academic skills and behaviors (Palko & Jones, 2009).   Video self-modeling is an innovative technique being used in elementary schools and it would be interesting to apply this method for my classroom.
